Can I use Flamenco Gel in an
unvented fireplace?
Yes! Flamenco Gel is now made using 100% corn-derived ethanol. This new petroleum-free formulation burns clean, so you have the option to leave the damper closed in a vented fireplace, or use in an unvented fire chamber that conforms to building codes for solid-fuel burning. Vent-free usage has the added benefit of reduced energy costs, as the heated air in your home is not allowed to escape up the chimney..
Vent-free gas logsets typically require an Oxygen Depletion Sensor (ODS). Is it necessary to purchase an ODS to use with the Flamenco? No! Due to the limited size of the fuel reservoir in the Flamenco Logset, you don’t have to worry about the oxygen content in your room reaching unacceptable levels. For any room size, the quantity of oxygen consumed by Flamenco’s gel tray is negligible.
By contrast, the large fuel tanks of propane gas logsets allow many hours of burn-time, even when unattended, creating the potential for unsafe conditions. And natural gas supply lines are unlimited.
Does Flamenco Gel have an odor when burning?
You may notice a slight odor when in close proximity to the burning gel fuel. However, while enjoying a fire, most people are not positioned close enough to the fireplace to notice, and do not find the smell objectionable.
For those particularly sensitive to odors, we recommend using the Flamenco Gel Logset in a vented fireplace. This is purely a matter of personal preference, as there are no known health or safety hazards associated with burning Flamenco Gel Logsets without ventilation.
When lit, Flamenco Gel produces a true and natural flame. Therefore, you should take any logical safety precautions, as you would with a wood or gas fire. Do not allow children or pets to play near your Flamenco Logset when in use. And please use a fireplace screen to shield your fire if these or other safety hazards exist in your home.
